"Originally known as Greenwood, the area later became Mayville, named for Captain William May, a manager in the nearby mining operations. The name changed to the more pleasant sounding Mayfield in 1891, joining Glenburn and Elmhurst as town names chosen to help convey a more pastoral image. "
