Mifflinburg Christkindl Market
Place: Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania
Sponsored by: Mifflinburg Heritage & Revitalization Association
Mifflinburg's annual Christkindl Market runs each year in early December. The town honors its German heritage with an authentic market, complete with an outdoor Christmas village erected specially for the event. Wooden huts decorated with fresh greens and white lights house a wide variety of local and regional specialty craft items. This market is held outdoors in the 400 and 500 block of Market Street, which lies one block South of Route 45 between 3rd and 5th Streets, in one of Pennsylvania's most charming small towns. In addition to the fact that the market is outdoors, parts of what makes this market so authentic are, the life-size German nutcrackers, and the 15-foot rotating German pyramid. Pyramids that signify the traditional German Christmas are candleholders that feature the nativity, which turns as the candles burn. Also available are specially imported German Christmas items including pyramids, nutcrackers, and more. Be enchanted by Mifflinburg's larger-than-life Tinsel Angel, a 17th century legend, that glitters like gold. Collect the Prune figures, a tradition that dates back to the 14th century. Since no celebrations is complete without food, the market features a festive sampling of special holiday goodies, like gingerbread houses, German and European pastries, beautifully decorated Christmas cookies, hot mulled cider, many varieties of German sausages, authentic goulash, and a variety of other foods. Other highlights of the Market are the German sit-down dinner: Pork & Sauerkraut. Some features this year will be more entertainment, the opening of the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum will feature a display "Here Comes Santa Claus" and a slide show, "The Many Faces of Santa," especially for this event. Also in the warmth of Mifflinburg's churches festively decorated you will hear holiday concerts. Outdoor and indoor entertainment features Mifflinburg's bands, choirs, the Die Shippensburg Blaskapelle German band, The Columbia Brassworks-brass ensemble, Marty Keller-playing his long Alphorn, Praise Mennonite Singers, KJ Reimensnyder-Wagner Singing Guitarist, Shady Grove Chorus, Enterline's Holiday Dancers, Hilby, the Skinny German Juggle Boy (back by popular demand). Enjoy the procession of St. Nicholas as he leads a procession through the Market on his white horse accompanied with renaissance music. Your children will have fun at the Lantern Parade Friday evening for children with Santa. His arrival is at 5:30, and leads the parade through the market to the Church filled with activities for children, one of the most popular being the making of gingerbread houses.
The Market ends 5:30 Pm Saturday evening and concludes with a half-hour Candlelight Closing Ceremony and Carol Sing of community and visitors.
