History & History Related Items Montrose history: "Named around 1812 by a local landowner, Dr. Robert Rose, Montrose combines the doctor's name with the French mont, meaning 'mountain.' The area had previously been known as Hinds' Settlement, after a Captain Hinds who brought his family here from Long Island ten years earlier. In choosing Montrose, Dr. Rose no doubt also had in mind the legendary Scottish town of the same name. Rose had a reputation for being a charming man. When residents of nearby Brooklyn mounted a campaign to locate the Susquehanna County seat in their town, Rose's personality carried the day, and the town of Montrose eventually claimed the prize. "
