Oil City is the birthplace of the oil industry following the discovery of Pennsylvania crude oil in 1859 just 14 miles north of the city. The region is a mix of rural and small urban areas. The city lies at the confluence of Oil Creek and the Allegheny River, two of the nation's finest recreational waterways known for excellent fishing and boating.
