History & History-related items
Before 1800, this area was settled by one, James Donahoe. He was a businessman here along with other merchants, Abraham and John Fulk, John Gump, A.C. James and Samuel Cessna. Other relatives of these men also arrived in the early 1800's. By 1856, the little community had become a borough. Samuel Williams was a prominent citizen who founded the Allegheny Male and Female Seminary in 1853. The school did well for a time, but the Civil War wrecked havoc as students withdrew to go home to fight or to be with their families. The school was then closed.
