Location

in Warren County, in a little valley just off Route 62, along the Allegheny River, about 22 miles south of Warren, PA. This is just about in the middle of the Allegheny National Forest.

Attractions

The name Tidioute is an Indian word meaning "far outlook or view". There is a tourist attraction known as the Tidioute Outlook that gives you an excellent view of this picturesque community and a portion of the Allegheny River.

For many years, Tidioute has been host to the Annual Pennsylvania State Fishing Tournament. Besides excellent fishing, deer hunting is another attraction to the woods surrounding this community. Throughout different seasons, the many hunting cabins/lodges and fishing shacks surrounding Tidioute fill with city folk and out-of-state sportsmen. During the State Fishing Tournament, so many people flock to this tiny town that downtown Tidioute can resemble New York City on a Saturday afternoon! Parking can become so scarce, that you will have to cross the blue bridge and park across the Allegheny River, along Route 62.

The scenery in and around Tidioute is magnificent year round! The thick, dense forest during summer is a haven for wildlife of all kinds. The rainbow of bright colors during the fall reminds one of trees of "fireworks". The heavy, wet snow that clings to pine tree boughs during the dead of winter lend an eerie alien-like appearance to the forests. The people who inhabit Tidioute have always been friendly toward strangers / sportsmen / travelers. They are traditionally hard-working, hard-playing, honest, good-natured, common-sense smart, family-oriented and fiercely loyal to their friends.

2000, June 20
Ladies and Gentlemen,
On 2000-JUN-20, I found an orange balloon on the shore of Bras d'Or Lake, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada, with the imprinted message: 40th Anniversary 1999 Pennsylvania State Championship Fishing Tournament, Tidioute, PA, "Catch and Release".
The exact location is at the eastern end of Big Harbour Island, on the shore of what is locally called "Big Beach", a half mile long barrier beach separating Gillis Pond (locally known as "Big Pond") from Johnson Cove of the Bras d'Or Lake.
There is a silvery greyish/blue ribbon attached to the balloon and a small loop and knot indicates that there was a message attached which had been torn off before the balloons arrival at the shore. I cannot tell whether it landed there from the air or was washed ashore from the lake, it was amidst some driftwood at the high water mark.
