Titusville was founded in 1796 by Jonathan Titus and Samuel Kerr. By 1847, it was a borough. But ten years later, Colonel Edwin Drake made a discovery that changed the area. While employed by the Rock Oil Company, He had the job of drilling for oil. On August 27, 1859, the first producing oil well was made. By 1866, enough growth had occurred that Titusville was incorporated with a population of 8,000 residents.
