History & History Related Items West Newton history: West Newton was founded in 1788 when pioneers, who had come overland from Massachusetts, stopped by the shores of the Youghiogheny River to build their boats for a trip to the Northwest Territory. Those pioneers traveled down the river to the Monogahela and then to the Ohio. Marietta was founded by some of these same settlers, when they ended their journey there. The original name of West Newton was Simeral's Ferry. Later named Robbstown, its present name derived from its location "west of New Town [Greensburg]".
