Those pioneers traveled down the river to the Monogahela and then to the Ohio. Marietta was founded by some of these same settlers, when they ended their journey there. The original name of West Newton was Simeral's Ferry. Later named Robbstown, its present name derived from its location "west of New Town [Greensburg]".
