History:
It was originally created as Rhode Island County in 1703 and renamed as Newport County in 1729. The city of Newport was founded in 1649.

The
Cliff Walk
The famous walk along the eastern shore of Newport. It was
designated as a National Recreation Trail in 1975. It is about 3.5 miles long
and is an easy walk for most of the way. Portions of the walk are temporarily
closed until August 2006
