History & History Related Items

Pamplico borders the Great Pee Dee river, named for the Pedee Indians, which means something good and capable. The rural community is home to abundant wildlife such as deer, wild turkey, and cougars which roamed the State until hunters nearly killed them all. Today, the forests are plentiful, but dwindling because of greedy timber companies who pay land owners pennies for valuable trees instrumental to the environment. Industries have polluted the Great Pee Dee river with toxic waste. To add to the problem, the public regularly dumps debris into the the Great Pee Dee. The rural community needs to be educated about respecting the environment. That includes wildlife like deer and trees.
