History & History Related Items Pawley's Island history: Early in the 1700’s, the rice planters and their families lived on plantations along the rivers of the area. They knew that staying near the rivers during the summer was not healthy for their families, so they looked for a place on the seashore where they could migrate for the summer months. Once they decided on this area, they moved their families, supplies, furniture and most everything that could be moved around May of each year and they stayed on the seashore until sometime in early November when the first frost appeared. .
