Return to Index History & History Related Items Bonesteel history: The Battle of Bonesteel and a brief history The residents of Bonesteel didn't like the lawlessness and vagrancy which was happening in town around 1904 when the population had mushroomed to 34,000 people. They rounded up all the undesireables and had them judged and convicted and forcefully made to leave town on the morning train. This became known as the Battle of Bonesteel. The first people came in 1890, but the town wasn't named until 1892 when a man named Bonesteel said he would give $100 toward the future school if they would name the town for him. They took him up on his offer and a year later, the school was built and the town was named Bonesteel.
