Volga, South Dakota Historical Events

2001, March 6
Volga Evacuated!!!!!!!!!!Monday March 6, The whole town (1300 residents) of Volga and anyone in a 5 mile radius was evacuated due to a massive propane leak. There were supposedly 6000 GALLONS of propane spilled at the Land of Lakes dairy processing plant in town. The leak occurred underground between a 30,000 gallon tank and the manufacturing plant. In the end, they discovered only 4500 GALLONS had leaked. Late on Tuesday evening officials began pumping propane from the ground into the air where it was burned by two torches. The process enabled Volga residents to return to their home on Wednesday night after two nights away. The roads are still blocked off by the plant and the town expects to start digging the leak up sometime this spring.
Just thought some people that didn't live here anymore would like to hear about the excitement. It took 60 gallons of propane to blow up a school building in Plankinton, South Dakota. Who wants to imagine what 4500 gallons would do!!
