Remembrances of Friendsville
I was told many years ago that my family (the Lee's) were from
Ireland and they founded the town of Friendsville Tennessee. I was under the
Impression that my great grand father started the town. Last week I was in
Friendsville and found that the family farm had been sold in 1985. The owner was
Kind enough to show me around and show me the restoration work he was
doing to the old farmhouse. I lived there when I was 6 to 7 years old. Then my
parents moved to Hammond IN. I went to the Friends Church and walked
through the cemetery and found headstones of the Lee family dating back to
1790's. The new owner of the farm was a bit of a history buff and told me the
local folklore indicated that the Lee's helped with the underground
railroad. The land that Friends Church is on is part of the Lee property. This
property was donated to the church and the church was constructed around 1807.
My father has no interest in the Lee's. His parents divorced when he was 2
and his mother took him to Arizona. When I was a little boy my dad was in
some sort of trouble and we lived on the property until he got back on his
feet. We never again communicated with my grandfather (John Robert Lee). In
1980 I visited my grandfather and great uncle Ned (T. Ned Lee), Uncle Ned
asked that I send Christmas cards to my grandfather, and I did. We also sent a
couple of letters. They were sent back?? I found out a couple of years ago
that grandpa died in 1982 and the Lee's decided that I did not need to know.
When I was 12 my father ran away from home and 25 years later I found
him. That is when I found out about my grandfather's death
