History & History-related items
Here is a history page for LaGrange.
This area was called "Itey Uch La" by the Chickasaw Indians who lived here. This means cluster of pines. It remained a trading post for the Indians for quite a few years. This settlement for the Indians makes La Grange the oldest town in the county. Samuel B. Harper received 167 acres of land here and is credited with the founding of the town. He based the layout on that of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was first chartered in 1829. Other incorporations occurred through the years in 1836, 1851 and finally in 1901. Back in the 1830's, residents did not like being so far from the other parts of Fayette County and particularly, the county seat. Attempts were made to leave the county and form a new one. These attempts ended in failure and later, a try to create Bell County also never succeeded.
