They came here in 1822 from Florida. When they donated over 100 acres of land to the county, the town was named for them. A few homes and businesses were first built as the town slowly grew. It wasn't until the Santa Fe Railroad came in 1880 that the population began to blossom. Within three years, the population grew from 300 to 1,000 people.
