Blanket originated in the 1870's. The first Post Office was opened in 1875. The current site of Blanket is approx. 2 miles from its original location. Many families came to Blanket and settled and raised cotton and large families. Many of the original houses are still occupied. Several unique two story homes still grace the presence of Main Street. Blanket has had several churches including the Cumberland Presbyterian, Presbyterian USA, Church of Christ, Methodist, and Baptist. The 1900 thru 1930's were a booming time for Blanket. Numerous businesses found a home in Blanket including 2 banks, lumber yard, mercantile store, grocery stores, blacksmith shop, automobile dealership, funeral parlor, numerous cotton gins, Plow company, feed mills, numerous gas stations, numerous newspaper, bakery, jail, drug stores, dry goods store, hotels, and many farmers and ranchers. With the onset of the boll weevil, cotton production stopped as well as progress in the city. Today Blanket is on a turn around. New waste management systems and water systems are being installed as well as a new school campus that is being built. Blanket is a great place to live and raise a family.
