Canton ISD is a mid-sized school district located in the beautiful rural countryside of East Texas in the heart of Van Zandt County. Citizens of the district are able to enjoy the peaceful pleasure of country life with easy access to the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex located only 60 miles west on Interstate 20.
Campus Facilities
Canton ISD is proud of its campus facilities. Canton Elementary School houses grades Pre-K through 2nd grade in facilities constructed in 1976. Students in grades 3-5 enjoy a new Intermediate campus that was constructed in 2001. A new Canton Jr. High Campus is currently being constructed for students in grades 6-8 and will be completed in 2005. Students in grades 9-12 attend Canton High School. This campus was constructed in 1989 and updated in 2004-05 with the additional of classrooms, baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, and a performing arts center that includes a 1165 seat auditorium. Academics
Canton ISD is proud of its longstanding reputation for academic excellence. The Texas Education Agency has named Canton ISD a “Recognized” district for 2004-05 placing the district in the top 32% of all districts in Texas. From academic reading-based instruction in Kindergarten to secondary Advanced Placement classes, Canton ISD students are successful in meeting the high expectations of the district and community. Special programs designed to accelerate student learning and instructional technology used to increase student motivation and workplace skills strengthen this academic emphasis.
Fine Arts Program
Canton ISD is committed to fine arts education and to providing the resources necessary to build and maintain a program of excellence. Dedicated professionals in the areas of Band, Choir, Art, and Theater Arts augment this effort by instilling each student with talent and dedicated work ethics. Students interested in art are able to enroll in the district’s Advanced Placement Art Program. The Canton High School “Mighty Band from Eagle Land” has the distinction of being the first band in state history to hold both the 3A UIL State Marching Championship and the High School 3A Honor Band Award in the same year.
The CISD choir program is another avenue for student success. Two choir groups participated in UIL contests last year. The Boys Tenor Choir was awarded first place in UIL Concert and the CHS Chorale achieved a first place ranking in sight-reading. Theater The Canton ISD One-Act-Play ensemble placed second in the state in 2003. All areas of fine art students routinely advance to the state level of competition.
The district’s commitment to the fine arts program can be seen in the construction of a new performing arts center at Canton High School. This facility includes a new band hall, classrooms for theater arts, choir, and art, and a 1250 seat auditorium.
Athletics Program
Canton ISD believes that lessons learned from commitment and competition will have a lasting and positive impact upon the lives of students. Students are able to participate and compete in football, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, track, cross-country, tennis, and golf. Highlights from the 2003-04 school year include advancing to Bi-District Play-Offs in football, participating in Regional Finals in girl’s basketball, and achieving a Bi-District play-off spot in baseball. Many individual athletic accomplishments were also achieved. Go Eagles!!!
