The Siddons-Barnes Log Cabin
owned by the Chico Public Library, Inc.
Article written by: Phyllis Herskowitz - entire article may be reviewed at: the Chico Public Library site
"Sometime between 1877 and 1881, N.E. Ide and his wife Fannie probably built the log cabin that became the home of James Austin Siddons and his wife in 1884. During the time that Dr. James A. Siddons and his wife Melvina were raising their children they added two rooms to the cabin. His family was raised in the house. They had two sons J.L. Siddons and J. Gilbert Siddons (who had been born in the log cabin). The home was sold to the Tully family. Sallie Tully was the mother of Bertha Parks Barnes. Over the years the Barnes family owned the house and enlarged it further.
In 1987 the Barnes house was torn down and the old log cabin was found inside. Its history was discovered and several folks in the town of Chico saved the old building, had it repaired and removed to a safer location. On the morning of April 5, 1997 there was a dedication of the historical marker for the Siddons-Barnes cabin, celebrated by the community and several historical society members."
