Lake Tejas, located on FM HWY 256E, is owned and operated by the Colmesneil Independent School District. The Spring-fed lake, dug out in the shape of Texas by the National Youth Administration in 1939, and named after the Tejas Indians, has clean and clear water that is tested each year for safety in both swimming and fishing.
Lake Tejas is opened in the summer months starting from May-Memorial Week-end to September-Labor Day Week-end. The Colmesneil ISD, Junior, Senior and college student are hired, trained and certified as Red Cross Lifeguards. The money made from the Lake Tejas benefits all the students of the district.
Of major interest to the many visitors to Lake Tejas each summer is the large swimming area, with pedal boats, diving boards, and a kiddy pool; the beautiful camping and picnic sites; and the designated fishing area for anglers of all ages stocked with rainbow trout, black bass, catfish, crappie, and hybrid perch.
