Chamber of Commerce.
This area was first known as Grapevine Springs in 1832 and was a farming community. By 1873, it was known as Gibbs, honoring former Texas Senator and Lieutenant Governor Barnett Gibbs. In 1890, the city received its final name of Coppell in honor of George Coppell. He was the engineer who is said to have brought the railroad to the community.

The City of Coppell has a Council-Manager form of government.The elected City Council sets the policies for operation of the City government. The City Manager, who is appointed by the City Council, runs the city on a day-to-day basis. The City Council consists of eight members - a Mayor and seven Council members.
