When the time came to name a county seat, several communities wanted the designation, including New California and Dixie. New California was chosen but since it had only two buildings and Garden City was more established, most of the Garden City dwellings and businesses were moved to the new site in New California about 1 ½ miles away. On 5 April 1893, the court renamed New California as Garden City.
