The small community that resulted was named for Mr. Gardner in 1886. The name was to have been Gardner City, but it was misspelled as Garden City. When the time came to name a county seat, several communities wanted the designation, including New California and Dixie. New California was chosen but since it had only two buildings and Garden City was more established, most of the Garden City dwellings and businesses were moved to the new site in New California about 1 ½ miles away.
