Founded in 1891 by August Schendel who named his new town Schendelville after himself. He applied for a post office in 1894 using the name of Needmore as a joke since they always needed more of everything. The post office amended the name to Needville since there was already a Needmore in Texas at that time. The town grew slowly reaching a population of 100 by 1914. There were also two schools, a community hall, three general stores, two cotton gins, and a movie theater by that date. The Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway built through the town in 1918 helping growth in the area. Most revenue in the area was raised from farming and ranching. During the 1920's and 30's, oil, natural gas and sulfur were found here again helping it to grow even more. During the 1920's there were 12 general stores, many other businesses and around 500 residents. When Highway 36 opened in 1932, Needville benefited from the first all weather road through town going north and south. The Needville Independent School District was created in the 1946-47 school year with the high opening in 1948 and the elementary school in 1960. Needville was incorporated in 1944. The population grew steadily from 603 in 1950, 861 in 1960 and 1,417 in 1980. The 1990 population was 2,199. The railroad discontinued its lines through Needville in the 1980's with the tracks being removed at that time.
