Ovilla history: Ovilla was founded in 1844 when Texas was still a republic by pioneersin the "Peters Colony". They came by way of covered wagon across the Red River. The Ovilla Historical Society has published a History Book in late 1996 which is very thorough, covering family histories, schools, churches, cemeteries, and civic activities. Ovilla was probably the first town founded in what is now Ellis County and has a rich history of early settlers which is told in 100 family histories and 800 photographs in 400 pages.
