Ovilla was founded in 1844 when Texas was still a republic by pioneersin the "Peters Colony". They came by way of covered wagon across the Red River. The Ovilla Historical Society has published a History Book in late 1996 which is very thorough, covering family histories, schools, churches, cemeteries, and civic activities. The book can be obtainedby sending your request by e-mail to A web page with information about the book is at Ovilla was probably the first town founded in what is now Ellis County and has a rich history of early settlers which is told in 100 family histories and 800 photographs in 400 pages.
