The climate for Portland is mild with prevailing winds to ease the temperatures History & History Related Items Portland history: Once an Indian village, Portland began from 840 acres purchased by John C. Willacy. It was founded in 1890 and grew slowly. By 1943, it had a population of just 500 people. Besides the 840 acres bought by Willacy, the New England Land & New England R.E. Company purchased 1,280 adjacent acres of land. Most of the stockholders of these companies lived in Portland, Maine. The new town was named in honor of their hometown. Portland attractions: Portland is on a 30-40 foot high bluff overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. It has the deepest water in the Corpus Christi Bay. The area is great for sportsmen with Duck and other game in abundance. Fishing in this waters is good as well as oysters. Spring and Fall migrations come through the area and make wonderful birding.
