See artifacts and mementos of the past in this area. The museum is in the old jail next to the county courthouse.
Half Moon Reef Lighthouse
located on Hwy 35 Bypass.
The lighthouse was built in 1858. It is three stories and in a hexagonal shape. Its original location was in Matagorda Bay. It was not lit during the Civil War when Confederate troops wanted to hurt the Union efforts. It began operating again in 1868 until a hurricane in 1942 damaged it to the point of condemnation by the Coast Guard. It was moved to Point Comfort in 1943 And then to Port Lavaca in 1979. After much restoration, the lighthouse serves as Port Lavaca's Visitor's Center.
Lighthouse Beach and Bird Sanctuary
This manmade beach includes the Formosa Wetlands Walkway and the Alcoa Bird Tower, an elevated gazebo on a pier reaching out 3,202 feet into Lavaca Bay. Many facilities for recreation are available at the park.
