History & History Related Items Round Rock history: Round Rock was established in 1850. The name came from a large round rock in the bed of Brushy Creek nearby. The story of the "Round Rock" is important to the city. It is an anvil shaped limstone marker in Brushy Creek. It marked the low water crossing for those crossing the creek along the Chisholm Trail. Part of the area history revolves around an outlaw named Sam Bass. Bass and his gang terrorized banks, trains and stagecoaches in the area. Ultimately Bass was killed when an ambush was set up by the Texas Rangers on July 18, 1878. He died two days later and was buried in the Round Rock Cemetery.
