KEY TO THE CITY - USA City Directory Top USA City Resource Guide
A huge gasoline leak in Gunnison of over 24,000 gallons forced large numbers of people and businesses to evacuate their homes and businesses. The gasoline leaked from a storage tank under the Top Stop gas station at the corner of South Main and East Center. Without anyone knowing, the gas leaked underground beneath South Main and through most of the southwest side of town. On 10 August, the evacuation was ordered for the whole Main Street block due to gasoline fumes. Soil ventilation systems had to be installed and some businesses were permanently closed. A large number of lawsuits were filed again WindRiver Petroleum because of the gas leak. The clean-up is expected to take over a decade to complete.
