History & History Related Items Levan history: In 1854, Levan was the place where the Walker War was ended when Brigham Young passed the Pipe of Peace with Chief Walker. Later, in September 1867, The name of LeVan was chosen by Brigham Young as the name for the townsite. The word means the rear portion of a moving army. Though this is the common story for the naming of the town, many residents say the real story is different. They say that Levan was named such because it is navel spelled backwards. Navel meaning the center as Levan is the center of the state. After the site was surveyed and the name chosen in 1867, settlers began to come in March, 1868. When the railroad came through the area, several small towns grew rapidly. Of these, Juab and Levan thrived. Juab was not able to sustain its growth, but Levan remains a nice small town on the ridge of the Juab Valley. Levan attractions: Learn all about Central Utah Major community activities each year include a Birthday Party each February to celebrate the settlement of the town. In July, on the 24th, is Pioneer Day with parades, games and food. A program and dinner are held for the community each year during the Christmas holidays. Return to Index
