The unusual name for Mexican Hat came because of a 2,500 ton rock formation near town which looked like an upside down Mexican sombrero. It is 60 feet wide and 12 feet thick. The town has been boom or bust several times during its history depending on what commodity was located nearby, such as: gold, oil and uranium
