History & History Related Items West Point history: First settled in the 1860's, it wasn't until 29 May 1910 that West Point City was adopted as the official name because of its location at the western-most point of Davis County. The Town of West Point wasn't officially created until 3 September 1935.. The first permanent settler was James Hale, who gathered salt from the Great Salt Lake. This area was then known as South Hooper. As the area grew, around 1877, South Hooper was placed in Davis County while Hooper stayed mostly in Weber County with parts in Davis County. Other names for the area were Muskrat Springs because of so many muskrats which remain today, Sandridge because of the sandy backwash from old Lake Bonneville and Fruitia because of so many fruit orchards.
