History:
A history page for Garfield County.
In March of 1864, a strong group of white settlers made the trip through the mountains to the Panguitch area. The Black Hawk War of 1865-68 caused them to abandon the area which was not re-settled until 1871. Garfield County was founded in 1882. The name was in honor of President James A. Garfield, who had been assassinated. The suggestion for the name came from, then, Governor Eli H. Murray. One of Utah's most remote areas, Boulder, settled in 1889, was brought out of oblivian when the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) built a road from Boulder to Escalante.

Geography:
Lake Powell and the mighty Colorado

some over 10,000 feet above sea level. Both the Sevier Rivr and the Escalante
River run through the county.
