History:
A history page for Grand County.
First white men to come to what is now Grand County were explorers from Spain. They found a crossing for the Colorado River near Moab. Other traders and fur trappers further developed the route which became known as the Old Spanish Trail. Mormon settlers came in 1855, establishing the Elk Mountain Mission, but were not successful as the resident Indians were already farming and felt they should stay rather than the newcomers. A few families were able to establish residency in the area in the late 1870's and early 1880's.
