History:

Summit County was carved from both Green River and Salt Lake Counties in 1854 with Coalville designated as the County Seat. White men first came into the county area in the early 1800's while working as fur trappers and traders. The Shoshone Indians were the natural inhabitants of the area, hunting and fishing with great success. The Mormon pioneers came here in 1847 and began to build up towns throughout the area. Their route followed the one established by the ill-fated Donner-Reed party from 1846. The pioneers changed course at the Weber River and turned to the southwest and Emigration Canyon. This then became the main trail for years to come. The Union Pacific Railroad built along the route as did a portion of Interstate 80 today. Parley's Park, settled in 1850, was the first settlement in the county with Wanship in 1854. Other communities followed. Coalville was established when coal was discovered there.
