History:
A history page for Uintah County.
An exploration party was sent to the area in 1861 by Mormon Church president, Brigham Young. The area was deemed valueless for settlement and no pioneers were sent. Also in 1861, USA President, Abraham Lincoln, created the Uintah Indian Reservation and began to re-locate many Utah and Colorado Indians to this area. The Uncompahgre Reservation was created in the 1880's in the southern portion of the county. Sufficient residents moved there to ranch and farm to warrant the making of a new County. Uintah County was formed from Wasatch County. The County Seat was designated as Ashley and later changed to the larger community of Vernal. In 1888 7,000 acres was withdrawn from the Uintah Reservation in order for people to mine that area after Gilsonite was discovered there. They called the area, "The Strip."

Geography:
The Green River dominates the county slicing through the central part. Other rivers are the White, Uinta and Ashley Creek.

The economy of Uintah County is mainly ranching and farming. There is also a strong emphasis on oil and gas.
