Eastville was established as the county seat about 1715, and has remained the seat of county government ever since. The Colonial Courthouse was constructed about 1731. The Courthouse contains the oldest continuous court records in the nation, dating from 1632. These records are avilable for viewing at the Clerk of Court's Office. The Debtor's Prison is just behind the Clerk's office and dates from about 1644. An ancient whipping post may be seen in the yard beside the prison. Many old homes surviving from colonial times still serve as private residences. A rock near the courthouse is a memorial to Debedeavon, "Laughing King of the Accomacks", a great friend to the Jamestown Colony and of the early settlers on the Eastern Shore.
