Mount Vernon attractions: George Washington's Mount Vernon: Estate & Gardens
1999 was the Bicentennial at Mount Vernon, the home and burial place for George and Martha Washington. Their estate overlooks the Potomac River and includes equipment for his drafting and surveying, military equipment, furniture and more, much of it as it was in his day. His birthplace was at Popes Creek Plantation. The family moved from Popes Creek in 1735 and settled at Little Hunting creek Plantation. They then moved to Ferry Farm near Fredericksburg. When their father died, George's older half-brother, Lawrence, inherited the plantation and renamed it Mount Vernon. He died in 1752 and two years later, George received the plantation. He lived there from 1783 until he died in 1799, interrupted by his tenure as president. Much of the original furniture is seen in the home, including the bed in which he died. Nearby Woodlawn Plantation has a Georgian-style mansion and formal gardens. It was deed to his foster daughter in 1799 as a wedding present. The Pope-Leighey House, a Frank Lloy Wright house, is also on the grounds. It was moved here from Falls Church, Virginia. NOTED NOTABLES
