History & History-related items
German settlers first came here from Pennsylvania. Many battles during the Civil War were fought near here as part of Confederate General Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaigns. On May 15, 1864, 257 cadets from the Virginia Military Institute helped the veteran Confederate troops gain a victory over the Union near here. The site is commemorated at the New Market Battlefield State historical Park.
