"Tappahannock is a site along the Captain John Smith capture route. Smith was brought here because in 1606 a European ship had sailed up the Rappahannock River and in a skirmish between sailors and natives, a native was killed and other natives carried off. Upon examination of Smith it was decided that he could not have been the guilty party because he was too short. Smith was then taken to what is today Gloucester County where the famous event of the Pocahontas legend occured."
