North of town, on September 22, 1864, Union forces, under the leadership of Major General Philip Sheridan, attacked at Fisher's HIll. The forces of Confederate Lt. General Jubal Early, were overcome by surprise flanking maneuvers with the Union forces winning a pivotal victory. Over 1,000 prisoners were taken during this battle.
