A history page for Waynesboro.
A land grant given to William Beverley in 1736 by King George II was the start of the area now known as Waynesboro. In 1797, the name was changed to Waynesboro to commemorate General Anthony Wayne, of Revolutionary War fame. He was known as "Mad Anthony."
Waynesboro was the site of the last major battle of the Civil War in central Virginia, the Battle of Waynesboro in 1865 between Generals Jubal Early and Philip Sheridan.
