Winooski history: Winooski was founded by Ira Allen and Remember Baker in 1787. The pioneers were lured to the area by the prospect of great waterpower from the river's lower falls. It was known as the "Mill City". Winooski was named from the Abenaki meaning of the word "Winooski," literally translated to "onion."
