Vermont is the birthplace of former presidents Calvin Coolidge and Chester A. Arthur.
History:
French Explorer, Samuel de Champlain came here in 1609 and discovered the Green Mountains and the lake now named for him, Lake Champlain. Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys felt strongly about preserving land rights and independence from England. They, along with Benedict Arnold, captured Fort Ticonderoga in 1775. In 1777 Vermont became an independent republic with its own coin and postal service. In 1791, it became the 14th state.
In 1864, confederate soldiers raided St. Albans in what would be the northern-most battle of the Civil War. The 21st president of the United States, Chester Arthur, was a Vermont native son.
Ida M. Fuller of Ludlow, became the first beneficiary of month Social Security payments in 1940. She received check #00-000-001 in the amount of $22.54. In 1954, Consuelo Northrup Bailey became the country's first female lieutenant governor and then in 1984, Madeleine M. Kunin became the first woman governor of Vermont.
Calvin Coolidge, who was from Plymouth Notch, became the 30th President of the United States in 1923.
