Blaine enjoyed a short but sweet reign as a gold rush boom town. It was settled in 1856. A single name, Semiahmoo, served what would become Blaine and Semiahmoo Spit. By 1870, the Homestead Act funneled many farmers to the area, where the town became a supply center for the dairy and fishing industries.

The settling of Blaine



Blaine is known as the Peace Arch City. The arch's foundation spans the US - Canadian border and is locaed in Peace Arch Park on Boundary Bay. The monument symbolizes almost two hundred years of peace between Canada and the USA. The Hands Across the Border ceremony celebrates this peace each year.

Peace Arch Park International Sculpture Exhibition
Place: Peace Arch State & Provincial Park
Time: Regular Park Hours 8am to Dusk Daily (free event)
Sponsored by: United States Canada Peace Anniversary Association
Peace Arch International Park is located on the US/Canada border between Blaine, Washington and Surrey, British Columbia. The 40 acre peace park that surrounds the Peace Arch is the location of this annual outdoor sculpture exhibition. Each year, the parks picturesque landscape and magnificent gardens hosts family gatherings, picnics, weddings, and annual events of international significance. Over 500,000 visitors tour this international historic site annually. The mission of the international fine arts program is to serve as a catalyst in the development of Canadian and American fine artists, while creating a greater awareness and appreciation of the Peace Arch and the International Park. A self guided tour brochure featuring the exhibition and park history accompanies the five month long exhibit. Free.
