The name, Montesano, means "mountain of health" in Spanish. The community was founded in 1852, making it one of the oldest settlements in the county.

Back in 1941, Weyerhaeuser began a giant timber farm using 130,000 acres which had already been cleared. This was the "birth" of the country's first tree farm.
