An Indian Chief, Sulktalthscosum, was named "Moses" by the local christian missionaries. He was honored in several places using his new name rather than his birth name of Sulktalthscosum.
The citizens of the hamlet of Neppel voted, in 1938, to rename their community in honor of Chief Moses and the city became known as Moses Lake.
