Stone Cabin near Durand
One of the oldest structures in Pepin County and probably in the state of Wisconsin is a stone cabinbuilt in 1842 located approximately 5 mile south of Durand, Wi. This cabin was the home of mygrandfather, Conrad Nussberger. Conrad's dad was among the first white settlers in Pepin County. After the accidental death of his father, Conrad claimed the homesteaded land and lived in the stonecabin until after the land was deeded to him by the Federal Land Grant Act of 1884. The land wasoriginal Indian land obtained by the US government by the treaty of 1837 between the US and theChippewa (Ojibwe) Indians. The Nussberger land deed was signed by Chester Arthur, President ofthe United States. The stone cabin still stands at its original location and condition on the formerNussberger farm.
