Edgar had its beginnings when the railroad was to be built between Wausau and Marshfield. There was a dense forest in between with a creek called Scotch Creek. While setting stakes for the rails, one of the men remarked it would be a nice place for a village. The others all agreed with him and it was decided to name the little settlement Edgar for his suggestion. The mapping of the settlement wasn't finished until 1891. At the onset, Edgar was like many of the other small towns in the state with a lumber company as the major emphasis. As business increased, more people came and with them came schools, shops, churches and more. By the time of incorporation in 1898, there were 346 residents in Edgar. Return to Index
