The small town of Algoma was about two miles west of Oshkosh and across the river. Algoma was absorbed into Oshkosh in 1856. Oshkosh continued to thrive and grow with many new settlers coming to take advantage of the river city and the great pine forest near it. In 1847, two lumber miles began which gave rise to much more growth for Oshkosh. The city became the county seat in 1850 and was incorporated as a city in 1853.
