Osseo, settled in 1857, has a strong Scandinavian Heritage. Some say that Osseo is an Indian name, taking the name from the son of the evening star in the "Song of Hiawatha". Others say that an Indian chief, coming over the crest of a hill overlooking the area, said "Ah-See-Oh", which describes the beautiful vista they saw. Either way, Osseo is what the town has been called since the beginning.
Lumber was plentiful in the area which gave the settlers materials with which to build their homes and businesses. Lake Martha, formed by a dam on the south fork of the Buffalo River, was named for an early settler, Martha Field.

Lake Martha Days
This is a yearly festival held each year on the third weekend in June. It begins on Friday evening and continues through the weekend. Food, Fun and games are everywhere. On Sunday, a parade in the afternoon caps off the event.
